26 Jun, 2008

Sindh Minister for Fisheries Zahid Ali Bhurgari has said that three mini fish harbours will be established at Ibrahim Hyderi, Mubarak Goth and Keti Bunder to facilitate the local fishermen. He said that shortly he would hold a meeting with the federal minister for food, agriculture and livestock for taking over the Korangi Fish Harbour by Sindh government for extracting optimum outcome.
He informed the gathering at an open kutchery held at peoples secretariat the other day that he would also approach the federal government for getting the deep-sea trawlers licences cancelled and seek ban on their ventures in territorial waters of the country.
Regarding EU ban, he said that efforts were being made for lifting the ban on the seafood exports. "Boats are being renovated and modified; insulated fish boxes and plastic fish crates are being acquired; and rehabilitation of Karachi Fish Harbour is being carried out to dispel doubts of EU," the minister added.
Sindh Fisheries Department (SFD) is also going to organise seminars for fishermen to acquaint them with latest modes of fishing to protect the species from getting extinct, besides educating them on tuna fish catch to earn national exchequer through export, he said. Zahid said that Sindh government has cancelled the contract and licence system in the greater interest of fishermen, and added that ban on fishing has been cut to one month. The ban will be enforced only in July.
