'Previous governments allowed cartelisation in economy'

28 Jun, 2008

Leader of the House in the Senate, Mian Raza Rabbani, in a statement issued here on Friday said during the tenure of PML(Q) and the caretakers governments formation of cartels was allowed under a deliberate policy to the detriment of the common man and the national economy.
He said the cartelisation of Pakistan's economy was allowed to take place in banks, cement and fertiliser companies, sugar and wheat. Raza Rabbani said these cartels indulged in manipulative and restrictive trade practices and have been responsible for a number of crises of shortage and arbitrary increase in prices, which have adversely affected the working class and the middle class of Pakistan. It has enhanced their own profits to unimaginable heights.
He further maintained that under the scheme of promoting a few big business houses and multi-national companies, the oil cartel has been allowed to fleece the common man under the garb of the price mechanism.
