THE RUPEE: dollar touches 70 mark on open market

Recovery phase was seen on interbank market on Friday, in the meantime, the rupee fell after crossing 70 market on the open market due to strong demand of the US currency, money experts said. On the interbank market, the rupee gained 17 paisa versus dollar for buying at 69.58 and 23 paisa for selling at 69.62, they said.
In the fifth Asian trading dollar steadied on Friday, keeping most of the sharp gains made against euro the previous day after payrolls data came in close to expectations and eased some fears about the health of the US job market and economy. The US currency also climbed against euro on Thursday as European Central Bank President Jean-Claude Trichet cooled speculation of more interest rate hikes.

The greenback resumed trading at Thursday's closing rates of Rs 69.50 and Rs 69.80 as its buying and selling rates, respectively. In the absence of buyers, the dollar lost its worth and at the end of trading, the dollar moved down and closed at Rs 69.30 and Rs 69.60 on buying and selling counters, respectively.
On the contrary, the rupee remained under pressure and further lost its worth against the British pound which was traded at Rs 136.20 and Rs 137.00 on buying and selling counters, respectively, against Thursday's closing rates of Rs 136.00 and Rs 136.60.
The dollar opened at Rs 69.60 (buying) and Rs 69.70 (selling) against last rate of Rs 69.80 (buying) and Rs 70 (selling). It did not observe further change in the evening session and closed at Rs 69.60 (buying) and Rs 69.70 (selling).
Pound sterling opened at Rs 136.25 (buying) and Rs 136.75 (selling) against last rate of Rs 137 (buying) and Rs 137.50 (selling). It did not observe further change in the second session and closed at Rs 136.25 (buying) and Rs 136.75 (selling).
