Canal breach inundates standing crops inflicting huge losses

The fifty feet wide breach occurred in the Goghera Branch canal near Chak 46-GD here early Sunday inundated hundreds acres of land besides damaging standing crops in the area and inflicting loss of millions rupees to growers.
As per details, at the wee hours of Sunday, 50-feet wide breach occurred in Goghera canal's left bank near Chak 46-GD, which inundated sugarcane, maize, potato, vegetables and other crops spread on hundreds of acres of lands. The katchi abadies in the area were also affected.
The XEN Irrigation Malik Rabnawaz and other officers reached at the spot and after nine-hours long hectic effort filled the breach. The spokesman of the Irrigation Department told that canal breach occurred due to holes made by mice in the bank of the canal, hence no penalty would be imposed on farmers.
The president Kisan Committee district Sahiwal Zakir Hussain Nibral has, however, demanded of the government to compensate the farmers, whose crops were destroyed by canal water gushing out from the breach, otherwise they would lodge protest.
