"Globalisation is a challenge which can be turned into opportunities for benefit of Islamic revival," said Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Oxford, UK, Dr Tariq Ramadan. He was delivering a lecture on "Globalisation and the Redefinition of Muslim Identity: Challenges and Opportunities" at the International Islamic University (IIU), says a statement issued here on Tuesday.
Professor Ramadan said that "Globalisation is an accepted international reality which has its merits and demerits while it has created opportunities for close relationship between cultures and civilisations for better interaction between followers of various religions."
He was of the view that Muslims all over the world are facing tremendous challenges to their common and collective identity rather their individual existence. Living in an international environment is an art and it should be very wisely utilised, he observed. Muslims should adopt policy of co-existence with other religions as confrontation harms spreading message of Islam. He also stressed upon the need of justice and equality in the Muslim societies to face the challenges of globalisation.
Speaking on the occasion, Senator Professor Khurshid Ahmed said that Muslims should spread the message of "Tauheed" and "Taqwa" to ensure a better living and bright future. "We must learn from the history of post industrialisation era and free trade regime that offered both advantages and threats," he remarked.
Rector IIU, Dr Manzoor Ahmed in his speech said "we should use opportunities provided by globalisation very clearly for our own interests and should not compromise our principles." Acting president of the university, Dr Zafar Ishaq Ansari and Head of Iqbal International Institute, Dr Mumtaz Ahmed also spoke on the occasion.
