Sindh chief minister slams LEAs for 'defective' performance

09 Jul, 2008

A meeting on Tuesday, presided over by Sindh Chief Minster Qaim Ali Shah, reviewed the law and order situation in the province and termed the performance of law enforcing agencies as "defective" in the wake of Monday's serial bomb explosions in Karachi.
The chief minister expressed displeasure over what he said "defective performance" of the law enforcement organisations, and issued clear instructions for further beefing up security in the province. The meeting also placed a Rs one million bounty on the head of those involved in Monday's blasts, saying that name of the informer would be kept in concealment.
The meeting also decided that electricity, water and sewerage systems in the affected areas should soon be improved. To avoid conspiracies by the anti-state and anti-people forces, the CM directed the law enforcers to remain on red alert in all parts of the province, and added that the law enforcement agencies should develop close co-ordination to ensure safety of life and property of the people.
Thanking Almighty Allah for thwarting the terrorists' plot to create ethnic violence in the City, Qaim vowed that his government, backed by the masses, would foil any heinous designs in future.
A detailed briefing on Monday's incidents was given to the chief minister during the meeting. He was told that two blasts out of seven were major explosions, which were planted in a taxi and a motorcycle. These blasts, however, did not cause any serious casualty and left about 43 people injured, of whom 25 were soon discharged from hospitals, while six others were still being treated at government expense. The meeting appreciated the masses for showing great sense of oneness and brotherhood after the tragic incidents on Monday.
The CM directed the two-member committee, comprising DIGs police A D Khawaja and Abdul Aleem Jaffery to present its initial report about Monday's incidents within two days. The chief minister also asked the head of Special Branch to present his report on various aspects of the terrorist blasts.
Those who attended the meeting included Chief Secretary Fazlur Rehman, IG Police Babar Khattak, Home Secretary Arif Khan, DG Rangers Major General Liaquat Ali, CCPO Wasim Ahmed, AIGP Special Branch Saud Mirza, DIGP Investigation Ghulam Qadir, DIGP West Aleem Jaffery, DIGP East AD Khawaja, DIGP South Iqbal Mahmood and others.
