278 incidents of violence against women in three months

A total of 278 incidents of violence against women have been reported during the last three months, revealed a report launched by the Aurat Foundation under it's Policy and Data Monitor on violence against women project on Friday.
The report launching ceremony was presided over by NWFP health Minister Syed Zahir Shah. Shirin Javeed, Program Officer, told the gathering that the number of cases was up by 36 percent.
The registering of FIR's in these cases of violence was only 90% she added, "it is interesting to note that out of 24 districts of NWFP Kohistan is the only district where not a single case have been reported." Javeed further said that the provincial capital of Peshawar and Mardan, the hometown of the NWFP Chief Minister, had the most cases of violence in this reporting period, with 291 cases.
The Program Officer told the participants that FIR's in a majority of cases was registered became the data was collected from authentic sources, otherwise there are hundred of violence cases where FIRs are not registered.
Samara Minallah of Ethromedia, while addressing the seminar, said as long as laws are not implemented, violence against women will continue. She highlighted the role of civil society im bringing the women's violence cases to the public. Minallah also presented a documentary on violence in Balochistan, and firmly said that her struggled would continue against Vani and Swara through out her life.
Syed Zahir Shah in his speech praised the efforts of the Aurat Foundation for highlighting the cases of violence against women. He said that the government is taking all efforts to end this type of violence in the provinces. He assured his full support to the cause of Aurat Foundation.-PR
