Relentless smuggling of wheat and fertiliser from NWFP's southern districts to Afghanistan over the last month that is further worsening flour crisis has severely hit these areas, particularly Tank.
Deputy Superintendent of Police District Tank (NWFP) Syed Liaqat Shah told newsmen on telephone on Monday that District police had confiscated around 187 trucks loaded with wheat in one month and recovered thousands of wheat and fertiliser sacks and registered 200 cases against smugglers.
Daily five to six trucks were confiscated by authorities while police backed by Frontier Constabulary check all others vehicles on different check posts, he said. "Those (smugglers) who smuggle wheat to Afghanistan for their own personal benefits would face the law," he said. Liaqat Shah said they were also trying to use alternative ways to curb smuggling. He, however, admitted that police faced many problems in Tank in its endeavours to stop smuggling.
