Lahore Development Authority (LDA) Director General Irfan Ali has directed Water and Sanitation Agency (Wasa) officials to ensure that in case of rain, water is immediately drained out from different areas, especially from low-lying areas, and citizens do not face any problem.
The DG issued these instructions while listening to complaints of the residents regarding water supply and sanitation on telephone on Thursday. Wasa Managing Director Dr Javed Iqbal and other officials were also present on the occasion.
He also directed that all field directors should maintain close liaison and co-ordination to install machinery in different areas to pump out rainwater and provision of uniform to the Wasa staff should be completed without any delay.
"Out of the 2,500 manhole covers prepared by Wasa's engineering wing, some 1,100 had been handed over to the field staff," he added. Irfan Ali asked the Wasa directors to ensure presence of operators at the tube-wells during duty hours and disconnect the connections of the consumers who had installed electric motors on direct water supply lines.
"Water tankers should be sent to the areas where water shortage is reported. Water tanks in large mosques should be filled so that the people could meet their water supply needs from there," he added. He said cleaning of sewerage should not be limited to removal of silt from the manholes, the Wasa should start a comprehensive programme for desilting over 3,600-kilometre long sewer lines and drains.
