City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal on Saturday suggested the establishment of an organisation that could work for the resolution of problems faced by journalists in Karachi. He made the suggestion at a meeting with a delegation of Karachi Union of Journalists led by its President Khursheed Tanvir and General Secretary Khursheed Abbasi and Senior Vice President Arshad Hussain here.
The Nazim was of the view that welfare of journalists cannot be looked after merely with donations but the objective can be effectively achieved with the establishment of an organisation under public-private partnership.
He said it would bring about positive and refreshing changes in the social life of journalists including arrangements for insurance policy, quality education for their children, better health care and medical facilities and financial help on important occasions. He asked the KUJ office-bearers to prepare a document containing their suggestions in this regard, which would be given legal cover after its approval from the city council.
The KUJ delegation informed the Nazim that 1400 registered members of KUJ were facing numerous problems due to insufficient salaries in most of the organisations and were unable to provide better education and health care to their families. The journalist community, he said, can also use these facilities. However, it would not be a permanent solution to their problems and they should prepare a document to get a quick remedy to their problems.
