Local Ulema staged protest here on Saturday demanding the release of Maulana Abdul Aziz and the reconstruction of Jamia Hafsa. Scores of clerics were carrying banners and placards inscribed with anti-government slogans, gathered outside the Multan Press Club.
Civil society activists and political leaders joined the protest to express their solidarity with Ulema. Addressing the protesters, Ulema urged the government to enforce Islamic laws in the country. "The government should not follow the policies of the previous administration as it was not a peaceful course of action," he added.
Allama Khalid Nadeem slammed the PPP-led government for delaying reconstruction works of Jamia Hafsa, saying the authorities were following policies of the previous government.
"The previous government destroyed the peace of Balochistan and the tribal areas adopting wrong policies. Hurling bombs and air strikes on innocent masses of the tribal areas and Balochistan is against the Islamic values," said Allama Nadeem, adding that it would be better for the rulers to restore to negotiations." "The rulers are following the American policies," said Suhail Javed, a civil society activist.
He demanded trial against former president Pervez Musharraf, saying "Musharraf should be tried for killing thousands of innocent people, handing over innocent Pakistanis to United States and violating the constitution time and again.
