The Islamabad High Court here on Friday dismissed two writ petitions, challenging eligibility of presidential candidates and seeking stay over the process, and observed that both petitioners had no locus standi to raise objections.
The single bench comprising Chief Justice Sardar Mohammad Aslam heard the pleas of Abdur Rehman Sadiq, 'Amir' of Hizbul Jammat ul Dawah Al-Quran Al-Sunnah, and Mohammad Younus, a resident of Kasur. The Chief Justice in his orders observed that since they had not been vying for the presidential slot, therefore, they had no locus standi to challenge the process.
He said that all the contesting candidates had not raised any objections over each other's candidature and had accepted the whole ongoing process. "Moreover, any order at this stage, when the election would be held tomorrow, is not possible," he added.
Abdur Rehman Sadiq had said that the contesting candidates were not eligible for the presidential post, as they did not fulfil the criteria laid down by Islamic injunctions. He cited various Quranic statements and Hadith and said that Islam had certain vivid requirements, which a head of state had to meet.
He had also challenged rejection of his similar plea by the Chief Election Commissioner. Mohammad Younus through his counsel SM Nisar Safdar had raised objection over the candidature of PPP Co-chairman. He said that Islam greatly values verbal or written promises and agreements, but PPP leader had breached his agreements with PML-N by stating that these were not Quranic words or written in Hadiths. He said a person who had no value for promises could not be eligible to contest the elections.
