Senators of All Parties Democratic Movement (APDM) have said they will support PML (N) candidate Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui in presidential election being held on Saturday (today).
Addressing a news conference here on Friday at the Parliament House, Senators Professor Khurshid Ahmad, Dr Abdul Malik and Abdul Rahim Mandokhel said that Saeed uz Zaman Siddiqui was the most suitable candidate for presidency as the office required a reputable person who could stay above party politics.
Professor Khurshid said they were nine senators belonging to Jamaat-i-Islami, National Party and Pukhtunkhwah Milli Awami Party (PKMAP). The APDM component parties, which has no seat in the National Assembly as the alliance boycotted the February 18 general elections.
Professor Khurshid said that NRO was not enough to clear Zardari from (alleged) corruption. The PPP nominee for president slot must declare his assets. He said that the PPP had announced that the party leadership had nothing to do with Saray Mehal, but now the party stance was something different. These factors created doubts, he said. He said that a large number of senators and MNAs were against Zardari and if they voted in accordance with conscience, Siddiqui votes would be more than expected. He said the APDM senators would vote for Siddiqui for the sake of democracy to flourish in the country.
Abdul Rahim Mandokhel said that the PPP had not reinstated judges and there all the democratic forces must vote for the PML (N) candidate. Democracy would remain incomplete if the judiciary was not reinstated to its November 2, 2007 position, he contended.
