Transition to democracy completed: Jehangir

09 Sep, 2008

PPP Secretary Jehangir Badr said that PPP would prioritise the welfare of masses as transition of democracy in the country has completed after Asif Ali Zardari's election as President. Talking to a private news channel, he said: "The real power behind the democracy is the people and it cannot take place unless the people get benefit of the democracy".
To a question, he said the provinces having differences cannot establish their supremacy, therefore, the concept of Senate has been given which has equal representation from all the federating units. "It is for the first time that the leaders of PML-Q tried their best to save their party which was part of dictatorship. It was actually a collection of the disloyal elements of all the parties gathered at one point by Pervez Musharraf", Jehangir Badr remarked.
Commenting on the statement given by the Governor Punjab that PML-N's government will not survive for 24 hours if the PPP separates itself from the coalition in Punjab, Badr said that the statement does not represent the party policy and quoted the example of India saying, "India is the world largest democracy and there are different governments in the states and in the centre".
Highlighting the party's role for strengthening democracy, he said the PPP has sacrificed a lot to consolidate the democracy in the country. However both the leading parties will have to be careful about the differences over petty matters in future. PPP's mission was to achieve country's development through getting an honourable position for the country in the community of nations, Jehangir Badr said.
