Indonesian shares closed 0.8 percent lower on Thursday, hurt by a weaker rupiah and further selling in commodity-related stocks, dealers said. The Jakarta Composite Index fell 14.91 points to 1,870.13 in moderate volume.
"Bargain buying by select foreign institutional funds lifted the main index from its low amid generally bearish sentiment," a trader told Dow Jones Newswires. The rupiah closed at 9,460 to the US dollar compared to 9,410 on Wednesday.
Top decliners included car distributor Astra, which tumbled 10 percent to 17,350 rupiah after reporting car sales dropped last month. Tin miner Timah dropped 8.3 percent to 1,560 rupiah, while Bank Central Asia fell 4.2 percent to 2,875 on profit-taking.
