A seminar on the Ph.D work of Syeda Birjees Bukhari was organised here, wherein he delivered lecture on his Ph.D work titled as "Synthesis, Analytical Characterisation and some Biological Application of Metal Complexes of Flavonoids".
The seminar was presided over by Mazhar-ul-Haq Siddiqui, Vice Chancellor University of Sindh. Professor Dr M. Iqbal Bhanger. Dr Shahabuddin Memon and Professor Dr M. Mahroof Tahir (St .Cloud State University (USA) were the supervisors of the research fellow. The Ph.D. work was based on nutritional quality of spices locally available in Pakistan. She said that besides number of botanical material, many spices have been reported to be rich in phenolic and flavonoids and have appreciable antioxidant properties. In order to cope with increasing number of diseases, high efficiency antioxidants are required.
To meet this challenge, antioxidant properties flavonoids have been enhanced appreciably by complexing with transition metals, she added. The chelation of flavonoid with metal is an important factor, which plays a vital role as a carrier and regulator of metal concentration. Therefore, in most cases metal flavonoid complexes are more efficient antioxidants as compared to the free flavonoids.
Professor Mazharul Haq Siddiqui said that our Research Scholar must work hard on such applied research projects for the benefit of society. He congratulated the scholar and his supervisor for carrying out such a awe-inspiring work at the National Centre of Excellence in Analytical Chemistry.
