Petition hearing against PML-Q workers' arrest adjourned

23 Sep, 2008

Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday adjourned hearing of a petition by opposition leader in Punjab Assembly, Chaudhry Zaheer-ud-Din against the alleged arrest of 200 PML-Q workers. District Police Officers (DPOs) of Gujarat and Mandi Baha-ud-Din appeared before the court and submitted that the record of cases registered against accused persons is lying with subordinate courts.
At this the judge harshly asked them to produce the entire record till the court time and adjourned the hearing till September 25. Later the DPOs submitted the record in the court.
The petitioner has challenged the arrests of his party workers and alleged political victimisation on the part of PML-N led Punjab government. Dr Khalid Ranjha and Chaudhry Fawwad Hussain represented the petitioner. He said on September 17 PML-Q arranged an Iftar-Dinner in the honour of its parliamentarians and workers.
He alleged that the Chief Minister Punjab directed the Home Secretary, who along with the respondent DPOs launched, a crackdown against PML-Q workers and arrested over 200 workers under fake cases of section 153 PPC. He prayed to court to direct the Inspector General Police Punjab to produce all the record of campaign against PML-Q and be restrained from invoking section 153 PPC in future.
