PBC members reject Justice Dogar as chief guest

27 Sep, 2008

Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) members have rejected the seven-member decision of the Council to invite Chief Justice of Pakistan Abdul Hameed Dogar as guest to receive additional space for the Bar office in Islamabad. While addressing a press conference here on Friday, members bar council, Hamid Khan and Mian Israrul Haq along with the President Lahore High Court Bar Association Anwar Kamal said, the decision would be finalised by the meeting after Eid.
Hamid Khan said it was not a consensus decision as all the members present at the council meeting belonged to Punjab and none represented other provinces. Khan said, there was no hurry or urgency to convene the meeting in Ramazan and to invite Justice Dogar as guest. The object of the meeting, he said, appears to damage the lawyers' movement.
Haq told the press that the decision by PBC had caused dent to the goodwill of the body. Kamal said the PBC meeting on September 24 was a glare negation of the bar stand about the PCO judges and Justice Dogar. He charged the council for delaying conduct of the elections on two seats of the body one vacated by the death of Imdad Ali Awan and other by appointment of Yousaf Leghari as Advocate General Sindh.
He further accused the Council for not issuing notification for the appointment of Pir Kaleem Ahmad Khursheed as member of the PBC. He said paying complement to Justice Dogar in council meeting was clear negation of the stand taken by the council through various resolutions in the past.
He said the pro-movement lawyers did not accept Justice Dogar as CJ but the members at the meeting in question have provided legitimacy to him in the office. The members also announced to set up a campaign camp for Ali Ahmad Kurd, who has been fielded as candidate of the Professional Group for the presidential office of the Supreme Court Bar Association for the next bar polls to be held on October 28 next.
