Raw sugar futures were hit by heavy investment fund sales to end sharply lower on Monday as players were mulling the rejection by the US Congress of a $700 billion bank rescue plan for toxic debt, brokers said.
The benchmark March sugar contract sank 0.59 cent or by 4.07 percent to close at 13.89 cents per lb, moving from 13.76 to 14.45 cents. Volume traded in the March contract hit 48,727 lots at 2:14 pm EDT (1814 GMT).
