South Africa on Wednesday said it supported civil nuclear co-operation with India and agreed to sell it uranium, more than a month after the Nuclear Suppliers' Group lifted an embargo on nuclear commerce with New Delhi. Leaders at the third summit of IBSA (Brazil, India and South Africa) welcomed the decision to allow India trade in fissile materials and technology in a declaration released at the end of their summit in New Delhi.
South African President Kgalema Motlanthe told reporters that his country had earlier supported the negotiations between the United States and India for reaching a civil nuclear pact.
"We have absolutely no objections in selling uranium to India," Motlanthe told reporters when asked whether South Africa will sell uranium to India. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva sidestepped the question as he chose to focus on the global financial turmoil. India's nuclear power generation has been suffering owing to shortage of uranium supplies.
