A top-level Pakistani delegation arrived here on Sunday evening to discuss energy cooperation with international financial institutions and United States officials, as the country strives to overcome power shortages through various projects.
The delegation includes Planning Commission's Deputy Chairman Salman Faruqi, Water and Power Secretary Ismail Qureshi, Wapda Chairman Shakil Durrani, Sindh Coal Authority Chairman Syed Asad Ali Shah, and Private Power and Infrastructure Board Managing Director Fayyaz Elahi.
The members of the delegation will have several meetings with the World Bank, International Finance Corporation, Exim Bank and the US Administration officials. They will also be meeting with selected Hydro-Turbines Manufacturers. The officials are expected to discuss a host of hydro, thermal and coal projects and to seek investment for these projects.
Pakistan's energy requirements have been expanding rapidly and the country is now facing power shortages. The visit by Pakistani officials is significant in seeking assistance for enhanced power generation through use of available sources. According to Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Hussain Haqqani, the government is geared towards accelerating its efforts to mobilise international support and investment for its comprehensive energy programme.
