The government of NWFP has created a new department namely Energy and Power Department with an immediate effect. According to an official notification the functions and responsibilities of department will include policy framing, control of licenses to private sector power projects, levy and collection electricity duty, monitoring and regulation of tariff of electric companies, administration of SHYDO Act 1983 dealing matters of power stations of Wapda in NWFP.
The department will also advise the provincial government on thermal, solar, wind, coal, nuclear and any other kind of energy and power generation, close co-ordination with the Federal government in respect of grant of licenses for oil and gas exploration in NWFP and co-operation with such companies and organisations undertaking such ventures in NWFP will also be the function of the department.
Moreover it will deal with matter relating to extension of gas by SNGPL in NWFP. Tariff on gas/CNG/petroleum products. Royalty on gas and oil, gas development surcharge, planning, designing and erection of power generation units and supply of electricity load to the province as per its requirement, representation of the province on the boards of Directors of Pesco and other Discos in view of hydro electricity as major contributor to, and source of energy formulate, regulate and review Provincial Power Policy and investigation into fatal and non-fatal accidents due to electrocution.
