Banda sworn in as Zambia's president

03 Nov, 2008

Rupiah Banda was sworn in as Zambia's fourth president Sunday, just two hours after election officials announced his narrow victory in last week's presidential race. The country's chief justice Ernest Sakala gave Banda the oath of office in a ceremony outside the national parliament in Lusaka.
The presidents from South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, and from Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe, attended the ceremony.
Banda eeked out a narrow victory over opposition leader Michael Sata of the Patriotic Front, in an election called after the death of president Levy Mwanawasa in August.
