Veteran politician and former Governor of Sindh Mahmoud A Haroon passed away after prolonged illness at his Clifton residence on Thursday afternoon, family sources said. Younger brother of Yousuf A Haroon, Mahmoud was 88 and is survived by daughter Ambar Saigal. Mahmoud Haroon's wife Begum Almas Haroon died in Karachi in July 2005.
According to details, the former governor was discharged from Aga Khan Hospital on Thursday morning and had moved to his residence in Clifton area where he breathed his last. Mahmoud Haroon remained Governor Sindh from August 1980 to 1982-83 and then again from January 1994 to December 1994. He had also served as interior minister during Ziaul Haq regime. His funeral prayers will be held on Friday at 10am.
Meanwhile, President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow and grief over the death of veteran politician and former interior minister Haroon. The President in his message prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss with equanimity. Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani expressed sorrow and grief over the death of veteran politician and former interior minister Mahmoud A. Haroon.
The Prime Minister in a telephone call to the late Haroon's daughter expressed his condolence and prayed to Allah Almighty to rest the departed soul in peace and grant courage to the bereaved family to bear this loss with equanimity.
