Shujaat, Elahi determined to carry ahead PML-Q

07 Nov, 2008

The President, Pakistan Muslim League-Q (PML-Q), Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and the party head Punjab, Chaudhry Parvaiz Elahi are determined to carry ahead the individual identity of the PML-Q, as they are vehemently resisting the moves to oust them from the party leadership.
Sources told Business Recorder on Thursday that the former ruling party was split into four-five groups. Each group is having its own agenda. Hamid Nasir Chatta is all set to have a final showdown with Chaudhry Brothers.
Shujaat and his meagre follower in the party are of the view that keeping the independent identity of the party would be far better than merging with other parties like the PML-N or the PPP. Most of the party leaders belonging to Punjab are eager that the Q must join the N league. But, Shujaat opines that the PML-Q leaders would sit on back benches, if it agrees to join the PML-N.
Some family members of Shujaat and Sharif had some interaction on the merger of the two parties, but these efforts have failed to yield the desired results. The Chaudhries do not like to remain unimportant figures in case they join the PML-N.
Further, Chatta is of the view that both Shujaat and Elahi have lost elections in their native constituencies. Elahi made to the National Assembly by winning a seat from Attock. 'Since they suffered defeat in their own constituencies, they must quit the party leadership so that new leadership could lead it in the right direction, which is a must for political survival,' sources said.
Most of the analysts are of the view that the PML-Q is doomed to meltdown as the top leadership of the party including its Secretary General, Mushahid Hussain Syed is not having a unanimous view.
Chaudhries have failed to patch up their differences with Senator Nilofer Bakhtiar, who is one of members of the forward bloc. But they have achieved a kind of success in patching up with pro-Musharraf Senator, Nisar Memon and his daughter Marvi Memon. This achievement of the Chaudhries is considered to be crucial, which suggests Musharraf not interested to lead the party in near future.
Musharraf and his staunch supporters including Senator Muhammad Ali Durrani and MNA Sumera Malik are also having strong differences with Shujaat, but there is a chance of patch up with Durrani, if Musharraf is not taking part in politics. In addition, the present Q leadership is not on good terms with Sumera Malik and they are considering cancelling her membership. Meanwhile, Chatta told a group of journalists that he would meet the Chaudhry Brothers in Islamabad on Friday (today) to take a final decision on how to take the party forward.
