'We have right over river water flowing from India into Pakistan'

14 Nov, 2008

Under the Indus Basin Treaty, Pakistan has right over the water of those rivers that flow from India into Pakistan, Pakistan Muslim League (N), Spokesman Siddiq ul Farooq said here on Thursday. Talking to Voice of America (VOA), he said blocking waters to flow into Pakistan is a sheer violation of the treaty as well as international law.
This shows the bad intentions of India, if they have no bad intentions then why India stops water despite being signatory of the Indus Basin Treaty. "The Indian leadership never fulfils its commitment about the Indus Water Treaty. I issued a facts sheet on the issue and proved that Baglihar Dam will render 3 to 6 hundred thousand acres of land barren in Punjab", he remarked.
India has stopped the water of Chenab River and it did not deny that it would harm Pakistani agriculture. We want to move ahead with India but such acts, which will create mistrust between the two countries that should not happen, he said. We want to resolve this issue amicably and do not want to indulge in fight and I hope the similar sentiments are also present on the other side, he concluded.
