Partly Facetious: why did Zardari not go to the UN dinner?

15 Nov, 2008

"Everyone went from the Muslim world, including kings and all..."
"But not our kingmaker..."
"Who is our kingmaker?"
"Asif Ali Zardari."
"Don't be silly: there is room for only one king if you know what I mean. And in this country we have kings, no kingmakers."
"Ambition is such..."
"In politics ambition must not be denigrated."
"I guess I do agree with that statement. But why did our President not attend the dinner?"
"Maybe he had a meeting with Palin and..."
"Don't be facetious. I don't think Palin would give him an appointment now."
"I see but in any case I heard from a source that Zardari didn't attend because he didn't want to meet the Israeli president."
"Why?"
"Perhaps, because the majority of the PPP-led government's coalition partners may be angered by such a meeting."
"Perhaps you are right but then Zardari is not really heeding his coalition partners' wishes other than to grant them ministries. I mean it's not as if our parliamentary tradition has been overturned."
"Parliamentary tradition must never be overturned."
"Don't get excited... Our parliamentary tradition is no important decision is made in parliament so there is a need to change this tradition..."
"Being facetious again aren't you!"
"I guess but I feel that President Zardari should have attended the dinner. India with its large Muslim population has relations with Israel and I believe we should too. It's a democratic country, the Israelis work very hard, and don't forget they have a judicial system that allows them to investigate their prime minister's corruption while he is in office."
"Very interesting that last bit."
