Size of Cabinet

17 Nov, 2008

There are 38 Federal Ministers and 18 Ministers of State making a grand total of 56 Ministers, excluding the Prime Minister. This perhaps is the largest Federal Cabinet in the history of the country.
There are many questions that need to be addressed. Firstly can we afford to have such an unwieldy Federal Cabinet? Does the proposed cabinet expansion justify its existence, specially when the country is passing through an economic crunch? Our leaders are out on a "Begging Mission" and by doing so we are sending out negative signals to the global donor community of our extravagance. There are 18 ministers of state holding similar portfolios as the ministers and this will result in duplication of ministerial responsibilities.
Total confusion - interference within the ministries - clash of personalities and overall poor governance will be the end result of this venture. The Prime Minister will likely face endless problems in the smooth functioning of the cabinet. MQM has not been included in the list and has not been invited to join the Federal Cabinet. MQM is a coalition partner and deserves its share.
