Kidnapping of foreign envoys: police claim arrest of masterminds

The NWFP Police on Wednesday claimed the arrest of the masterminds in the kidnapping of the Peshawar-based Consul General of Afghanistan and commercial attaché of the Consul General of Iran.
"The police has arrested the masterminds in the kidnappings of Peshawar-based Consul General of Afghanistan, Abdul Khalik Farahi and commercial attaché of the consul general office of Iran, Heshmat Attarzadeh," disclosed NWFP Inspector General of Police, Malik Mohammad Naveed while talking to journalist at anti-terrorism training centre of police in district Nowshera.
However, he said the kidnapped diplomats have been kept in tribal area, where police lacks access. He said that efforts for the recovery of kidnapees were under way. The police chief further claimed the arrest of 515 members of 77 gangs of kidnappers in the province. He said that police with its hectic efforts had blocked the entry of the kidnappers into the province.
The law and order situation in the province was virtually very bad and abduction and kidnapping for ransom has become a routine. During last one month more than 60 people, majority of them family members of influential and wealthy people have been kidnapped from NWFP.
