The UN Security Council sanctions committee and Interpol have recognised Pakistan's efforts being made against terrorism, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said here on Wednesday.
Talking to journalists following the visit of Interpol Secretary-General Ronald K Nobel to Pakistan, she said that recognition by the world bodies validated Pakistan's anti-terror stance, and showed trust in its commitment and capability to fight terrorism.
She said that Interpol chief's frank statements at a press conference gave further credence to Pakistan's stance against international terrorism in general and Pakistan's stated position on the Mumbai terror attacks in particular. "The government also welcomes Noble's statements, clearly counting Pakistan among the most active contributing countries in global policing of terror", she said.
"The Interpol chief has rightfully acknowledged that Pakistan has suffered from terrorism more than any other country. More important is the Secretary General's message that any country that has suffered as much at the hands of terrorists as Pakistan is in need of international support, and not international condemnation at such a critical time in the world's anti-terrorist struggle", she said, adding that Interpol's stance on Mumbai terror attacks investigations also validated Pakistan's position on this issue.
She said that Pakistan has consistently maintained that it has extended co-operation to India for joint investigations into the Mumbai attacks, "We still await credible and incriminating evidence from New Delhi that we can act upon", she said.
She said that the government notes that Interpol has also not received any information from India, whereby an internationally co-ordinated effort could be undertaken to trace the perpetrators through multilateral counter-terrorism mechanisms. Responding to a question regarding war threats in the region, she said that Pakistan was acting with utmost restraint and the Pakistani people could not be deterred from the path of peace and regional co-operation. However, she added that there should be no doubt in anyone's mind about the government's resolve and capability to defend the country's territorial integrity.
