30 Dec, 2008

The Sindh Home Department has asked the Pakistan army to standby during the Muharram-ul-Haram rituals on 8th, 9th and 10th of the month to maintain law and order. Although, there is no need to deploy army personnel in the province, it will only remain alert to help the law enforcing agencies in case any major incident takes place during this period, official source of the ministry told Business Recorder on Monday.
"The Federal Interior Ministry had asked officials of all four provinces for the deployment of army in the provinces," he said. However, he said the Sindh home department has asked the army to standby during three days of Muharram and it could be called in the wake of an emergency, he added.
The Town Police Officers (TPOs) are evolving a security plan for their respective towns to provide security to every small and big mourning procession that will be simultaneously taken out on the eve of Ashura. There are around 600 locations in the city, which may be declared sensitive.
