Indian woman jailed for swindling dozen 'husbands'

31 Dec, 2008

Police in the north Indian city of Dehradun have arrested a woman who reportedly married more than a dozen older men and promptly ran off with whatever money and valuables she could get her hands on. Her most recent victim told local police that the woman, who went by the name Afsari, had run away with jewellery worth more than 100,000 rupees (2,000 dollars), as well as 85,000 rupees in cash, the Press Trust of India reported.
Police said the 31-year-old femme fatale charmed her way through two states, duping a series of men into marrying her with the help of her actual husband, who was also arrested for his part in the scam. Police are currently searching for another man named Bharat, who is believed to have introduced and married the men to Afsari for a fee.
