THE RUPEE: moves both way

02 Jan, 2009

The rupee moved both ways on the open market on Thursday at the starting session of the new-year 2009, dealers said. On the open market, the rupee lost 30 paisa against the dollar for buying and selling at 78.80 and 79.30, they said. The rupee gained modestly in relation to the Euro, rising 60 paisa for buying and selling at 109.00 and Rs 109.20, they said.
The interbank market rates were not issued owing to bank closing, they added. Amid fourth session, the US dollar rose and posted its first yearly gain against a basket of currencies since 2005 as the worst financial crisis in 80 years led investors to take refuge in the greenback.
Despite a deepening recession in the United States, the dollar emerged from a seven-year downtrend as US-based investors brought cash home and overseas investors parked money in the relative safety of dollar-denominated assets such as Treasuries.
