The Prisons Department on the special directive of the Chief Minister Punjab in a crackdown has recovered more than 1,500 cell phones from prisoners in jails and 37 from the secret body parts while another 7 were retrieved after proper surgery in Services Hospital.
Inspector General of Prisons Punjab Mian Farooq Nazeer while talking to APP here on Sunday said that a record number of 496 cell phones were recovered alone from camp jail under the supervision of Superintendent Gulzar Ahmad Butt. He said 157 cells phones were also found unclaimed in various barracks during the crackdown. He said all these mobiles were traced with the help of screening machines, which were later recovered from their secret body parts and by operation conducted at Services Hospital.
He said that their photographs have been displayed at the notice board of the jails. He said all of them have been put in "Chaki" as a punishment under jail manual for a period of one month which is extendable in case of non-compliance of discipline.
When contacted Gulzar Ahmad Butt said that "despite presence of 5,341 prisoners in the jail against the sanctioned strengthen of 1,050, we are trying our best to purge the prisons of the menace of narcotics and mobile telephones". He said that in view of this bad experience, he has allowed only delivery of meals. He said quality of food is ensured in jail as four days chicken and two day beef is being served to all prisoners with 'basmati' rice.
