TSML completes construction of Reduction Furnace Tower

28 Jan, 2009

Tuwairqi Steel Mills Limited (TSML), Pakistan's first private-sector integrated steel manufacturing project of Al Tuwairqi Holding, has completed construction of a 107-meter high Reduction Furnace Tower at Bin Qasim Port, Karachi. With the successful completion of this tower, TSML has added another skyscraper to the industrial map of the country.
On this historic occasion, TSML Director (Projects) Zaigham Adil Rizvi expressed gratitude and congratulated his entire team for achieving such a milestone in time envisioned. Regarding the current status of the project he said, "The project is progressing on a fast track basis; the cold commissioning and subsequently the hot commissioning with a regular production is targeted in June.
This is phase-I of the project, while phase-II of the project, which is Electric Arc Furnace for the production of billets/slabs would also commence in 2009." The furnace tower employs the world's most advanced Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) technology of the MIDREX Process owned by KOBE Steel of Japan. This environment-friendly and low consumption process has more than 67 percent world market share of the overall DRI production.
Phase-I of the project constitutes a DRI Plant with the capacity to produce 1.28 million tons of high-quality steel per annum and is targeted for completion in the second quarter of 2009. Phase-II of the project, which consists of an Electric Arc Furnace and a Continuous Caster, is targeted for completion in 2011. As backward integration, a Pelletisation Plant of 2.4 million tons capacity has also been envisaged in the third phase of the project.-PR
