Punjab Assembly session today

02 Feb, 2009

The 11th session of the Punjab Assembly would be held today (Monday) at (3:00 pm) chaired by the Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal. The session, besides putting up a bill on health sector, would also deal with the issue of the doctors. In this session, it would be further interesting to watch the behaviour of two major political parties of the country on the issues.
In the recent past, many pundits from both the major parties had been indulging in statements and-counter statements over the fate of the government in Punjab. Then again, what would be the reaction of the Punjab legislators regarding disqualification case of Sharif brothers would be having an impact on the national politics. How the legislators of both the groups would react depict the future of Pakistani politics.
Punjab Assembly in the past has given its feelings on the rising cost of electricity, Gas, CNG and taxes on other items including cost of commodities. How it behaves on the subject of rising inflation in the assembly is also keenly awaited by the masses as they feel that their elected representatives need to do something regarding the ever rising cost of various commodities. Then again, the question of stability of the democracy also depends on how our legislators fair. Using the unfair tactics cannot upset a body of legislators, which caters to issues of the masses.
The pattern of democratic phenomenon usually depends on the working of assemblies in the civilised world. How our assemblies work on that pattern is yet awaited as the masses feel that more is yet to be done on issues pertaining to the assembly members regarding masses.
Although becoming a member in any legislative assembly of the country is difficult to understand by a commoner, the Prado Parade in holding of sessions is a common feature. In the coming session again it is yet to be seen how our legislators behave regarding time available to them in the session, which they usually waste in quarrelling and secondary matters in the session.
Then again, the formation of the parliamentary committees had been complete and the performance of these secretaries is yet to be ascertained in the session. It is unfortunate that in a middle economy country that has a poverty level ever increasing the assemblies has to cater to much bigger issues than their petty tussles. The performance of the 11th session of Punjab Assembly would be judged also in the context and legislators must feel that they are representatives of a poor developing nation rather than having a psyche of their meetings in London, Dubai and at resorts in expensive hotels. It is wished that our legislators think otherwise and spend time in their sessions behaving as servants of the masses.
