Sindh government stops funding for 12 Karachi uplift schemes

The Sindh government has stopped releasing funds for 12 Karachi development schemes. Sources in Sindh Planning and Development (P&D) Department told Business Recorder on Wednesday that the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) had proposed 12 development schemes in 'Karachi Package' under Annual Development Projects (ADP) 2008-09.
Out of these, 11 schemes pertained to road sector while one scheme came under CDGK Culture Department. They said that all eleven road rehabilitation schemes had been proposed for two years implementation at a cost of over Rs 2 billion. Sources said that CDGK had decided to take up these schemes in the second half of the current financial year, and to spill over to next year.
However, the Sindh Peoples Development Committee (SPDC), constituted to identify the development portfolio for the next financial year and make recommendations to the executing agency for preparation of the new ADPs, raised several objections regarding these schemes, which was not supposed to be in its ambit.
The committee said that CDGK had only taken up road schemes, ignoring other sectors, and asked the Executive District Officer (EDO) of works and services department to include other sector schemes such as water supply, drainage in order to have a balance.
However, the representatives of CDGK were unhappy with the decision made by SPDC, saying that the committee had no right to send recommendations regarding development schemes proposed for current financial year, and termed it as unconstitutional.
