A roadside bomb exploded near a military convoy in Wana bordering Afghanistan on Sunday, injuring a soldier, officials said. The bomb went off near the bazaar in Wana, the main town in South Waziristan region, local government official Shahab Ali Shah said.
"A military vehicle was damaged and one soldier was wounded," the official said. A military official also said the soldier suffered only minor injuries. The lawless tribal areas in north-west Pakistan have been wracked by violence since hundreds of Taliban and al Qaeda rebels sought refuge in the region after the US-led invasion of Afghanistan toppled the Taliban regime in late 2001.
