United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has embarked on a project 'Sustainable Development of Commercial Scale Wind Power Generation Project' referred to as Wind Energy Project (WEP). The project is being funded by Global Environment Facility (GEF) and implemented through Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB).
A spokesman of the AEDB said that WEP is creating enabling environment for the development of commercial scale wind power projects in Pakistan. WEP is inviting bids from qualified firms for design, supply, commissioning and maintenance of seven wind masts to be installed at recommended sites on turn-key basis.
He said that the objective of wind masts installation is two-fold i-e to identify new wind farm areas by carrying out micro-sitting of promising windy sites and to ensure availability of bankable wind data for the development of commercial scale wind power projects in Pakistan. "These wind masts will also serve as a standard demonstration wind masts installed according to established/recommended international standards", he added.
