Supreme Court moved against imposition of governor's rule

01 Mar, 2009

The imposition of governors' rule in Punjab was challenged on Saturday in Supreme Court. Shahid Orakzai filed a petition in Supreme Court of Pakistan challenging the enforcement of governor's rule in Punjab. He pleaded in his petition that on being declared one person disqualified, Governor's rule in the province could not be imposed.
Orakzai in his petition also pleaded that disqualification of former Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif by Supreme Court does not affect the Punjab Assembly. The petitioner said that the decision relating to governor's rule in Punjab was not correct and in violation of the constitution.
It is pertinent to note here that on February 25, Supreme Court upheld the decision of Lahore High Court regarding the disqualification of Sharif brothers. Soon after the court decision, President Zardari enforced the governor's rule in Punjab.
