Government criticised for energy shortage, load shedding

21 Mar, 2009

The PML-N Finance Secretary, Mohammad Pervez Malik on Friday strongly criticised the government for load shedding said that the present regime is showing no interest in enhancing the power generation while energy crisis is worsening with every passing day. Malik said that chronic energy crisis had destroyed the whole industrial base.
He also said thousands of industrial units had been closed due to energy crisis and a large number of workers lost their jobs currently facing starvation, but policymakers did not bother to think about it. Textile industry has more than 60 percent share in the countrys export, 27 percent in industrial value addition and 38 percent in sector employment, but energy deficit has already pushed this large sector to the wall.
If timely steps were not taken remaining industry would also sink down for ever, he added. According to him, exporters would not be able to meet their export orders. The government should evolve long-term and short-term plans to enhance electricity production in consultation with real stakeholders, he suggested.
Long-term plan include utilising all hydel resources by building big water reservoirs and power generation units, which is a cheaper way to produce energy. The government should also go for alternative energy resources like other countries, he added. Germany is producing more than 21000 MW energy while India is producing more than 7000 MW power through wind energy.
