PPP in Punjab: Bilawal may bring changes to party ranks

29 Mar, 2009

Chairman Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari may bring changes in party set up in the province of Punjab, said the party sources. According to the reliable sources, a proposal is under serious consideration of the party leadership to bring vital changes in party set up after a defeat on political front in Punjab.
The sources said the party chairman might start with replacement of the party secretary general in Punjab. The sources said the Punjab parliamentary party had criticised the party set up in Punjab in the presence of Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani. It is also learnt on good authority that the former party leadership in Punjab has also reviewed the reasons of partys ineffective role in Punjab, particularly in the wake of Governors Rule here.
According to the sources, the preliminary findings suggest that the PPP Punjab had failed to activate the party in Punjab. They said the party could organise only one district level meeting in Punjab and that too in Lahore City. No such activity was extended to rest of the 31 districts of the province, they added.
Further, they said the party leadership in the province had also ignored all the 31 districts while selecting party office bearers in Punjab. According to them, all office bearers in PPP Punjab were selected from the Lahore City, which resented the party workers at large in the province.
Also, they added, the provincial leadership could not perform at the media front and ad-hoc arrangements were made to this effect. There was no one like Farzana Raja in the party, which could compete with oppositions propaganda in Punjab. The party sources said that both the chairman and the co-chairman of the party would hold an important meeting in Lahore where it is likely to take these decisions.
