Bollywood ‘Khiladi’ Akshay Kumar has always been extremely vocal on social issues especially matters dealing with increasing awareness and self-defence. The actor recently opened up about his own experience of being sexually harassed at a young age of 6.
Akshay Kumar is the one actor who has constantly emphasised on society’s sensitive issues and spoken loud and clearly on matters pertaining to women’s and children’s safety and the necessity of self-defence education time and time again in his 30 year career.
The actor recently talked about a traumatising incident that happened to him when he was a just 6 years old whilst addressing to a seminar on women’s safety: “When I was a very young kid, a lift-man once touched me inappropriately. Since I had good communication with my parents, I told them about this incident. Later, the same person was caught in another case and was found to be a habitual offender. Parents and children must have a free interaction so that such offenders are identified immediately,” Mumbai Mirror reported.
Even though the predator was later arrested and action was taken against him, Kumar was left scared for life by the disturbing incident. The actor encouraged parents to be more communicative and comfortable with their offspring as it will help enabling the children to talk about these issues more openly.
“I was a shy kid and was relieved that I could speak about this to my parents. But even today, I find it difficult to say the word ‘bum’. We must encourage women and children to speak up and tell their families if they encounter anything strange so that they can be protected and empowered.”
Akshay Kumar is currently busy promoting his upcoming movie ‘Toilet Ek Prem Katha’ which is yet again made on a social issue in India, the movie is set to release on August 11.
