18 Apr, 2009

A full bench of Lahore High Court here on Friday adjourned without fixing next date of hearing the proceedings in a contempt petition against Editor Investigation and Editor-in-Chief of an English daily enabling the respondents to file their written replies.
Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and other lawyers represented the respondents and sought time for filing the replies to the petition filed by Barrister Zafarullah Khan of Watan Party Pakistan. Aitzaz Ahsan told the bench that the Editor-in-Chief of the respondent newspaper was out of country, however, editor investigation Ansar Abbasi was present in the courtroom.
Regional Police Officer (RPO) Gujranwala Zulfiqar Cheema also made his appearance before the court and said he never think to undermine the sanctity of judiciary. He said the underworld gangster Nannu Goraya was interrogated by a police team headed by a SP and he was no idea that he (Nannu) would record his statement against a judge of the high court.
RPO said being a responsible police officer, he sent the report to chief justice of the high court. However, the bench directed the RPO to file his written reply before next date of hearing. Meanwhile, the bench dismissed as withdrawn a petition of Nawaz Cheema praying to terminate the RPO Zulfiqar Cheema for committing contempt of court. The bench observed that the contempt of court charges were yet to be proved against the RPO so the prayer of the petitioner was premature.
