The Department of Excise and Taxation, NWFP collected Rs 900 million during three quarters of the current financial year securing 60 percent recovery of the set target of Rs 2 billion. This was told during a meeting on Saturday with the NWFP Minister for Excise and Taxation, Liaquat Shabab in the chair.
The Secretary, Fareeha Begum, DG Dr Umbar Ali Shah, ETOs of all districts and other concerned officers of Excise and Taxation Department attended the meeting. The minister expressed in the meeting deep satisfaction over the activities of Excise and Taxation Department regarding different taxes recoveries made in the first nine months of the current fiscal year. He directed all the officers and officials to speed up their efforts for achievement of 100 percent recovery target.
Further, the meeting discussed the recovery made by each ETO in different fields of taxes and the progress of all the districts was compared with each other. It also appreciated the results achieved in Malakand region, especially in Swat District regarding collection of tax. Officers of the department were directed to consider the duty routine of the officers working in Malakand region as an example so that their duties could also be placed in good categories.
The NWFP minister said to the meeting that property tax on commercial and residential buildings and motor vehicle registration and token taxes are the backbone of the overall targets and asked to give due consideration to these sectors to get maximum income for the province.
He also asked all the concerned to bring the newly constructed commercial and residential buildings in the tax-net and ensure recovery of arrears in all tax sectors, so that the provincial government could get relief from the financial crisis.
Shabab also directed all the officers to present detail reports of all sectors regarding taxes in the next meeting. Further, he directed the administrative department to tackle the case of professional tax of federal government employees in co-ordination with the provincial government to settle the issue as per the laid down rules.
