PFMA urges minister to clarify ban on wheat movement

28 Apr, 2009

Chairman, Pakistan Flour Mills Association (PFMA), Sindh Circle, Syed Johar Qandhari has urged the food minister Sindh to clarify its policy about ban on inter-provincial and inter-district wheat movement.
In a letter to the minister, he invited his attention towards the recent advertisement published by the Punjab government in newspapers that it has removed ban on inter-provincial and inter-district wheat movement to ensure that the growers should get guaranteed wheat price and general consumers may get unrestricted access to quality flour at affordable price.
He said that wheat arrived from Punjab is being detained by the Sindh food department at the Sindh and Punjab border and check posts have been established by the said authority.
Due to this reason, the price of wheat in non-wheat growing areas of Sindh in general and in Karachi particular is unstable and the flourmills are unable to maintain price level of wheat flour.
He also urged the minister to remove the check posts and direct the relevant officers to refrain from hindering the wheat movement towards Karachi. This action will ensure price stability and availability of wheat throughout the Sindh province besides bringing relief to the consumers. He noted that restriction on wheat movement do not exist in any of the other province including NWFP and Balochistan.
