Paddy cultivation banned in Matiari: growers asked to switch over to alternative crops

29 Apr, 2009

The D.C.O. Matiari Dr Baqaullah Unar has put a ban on paddy cultivation throughout the district, directing the agriculture officials to guide the growers to switch over to alternative crops. He asked the concerned authorities to take strict measures to restrict rice cultivation.
If any landlord or grower has already sown the paddy, he should voluntarily destroy it and switch over to some other crops, DCO said this while presiding over a meeting of the committee constituted to monitor the ban on paddy cultivation in District Matiari.
He said that if we don't discourage the paddy cultivation, salinity and water logging will increase, which has already destroyed fertile lands. He said that if any landlord or grower is found to cultivate the paddy in the district his crop will be destroyed and action against him will be taken according to the rules. In spite of these efforts if some farmers succeed to bring their crop at maturity a heavy Abiana will be imposed on them.
Earlier, presiding over a meeting of officials of agriculture and Revenue, growers and dealers about the availability of urea fertiliser for Kharif season, the DCO directed the concerned authorities to make sure the supply of fertiliser and have better working relationship so that a severe action can be taken against profiteers and the dealers who are involved in black-marketing of the urea.
