Professors' protest irks commuters

08 May, 2009

Professors' protest call irked commuters as the traffic remained blocked for hours on the Mall road and other arteries here Thursday afternoon. Long traffic jams were witnessed on the Jail Road, Mozang, Davis Road and the Lower Mall as well. The professors had gathered in front of the Punjab Assembly at the Charing Cross to press the government for the acceptance of their demands.
They have been demanding the award of time scale, upgradation at par with their university counterparts, raise in conveyance allowance, fixed medical allowance and regularisation of contractual lecturers. School children and women are the worst sufferers of the protest, as they had to wait for hours in the sizzling heat for the smooth flow of the traffic.
Some motorcyclists were seen in scuffle with the professors who tried to stop them cross the barriers erected by the protestors. Talking to APP, a commuter said that the professors should have adopted some other means of protest rather than creating difficulty for the common people.
