National Assembly meets today to discuss Malakand operation

11 May, 2009

The National Assembly will here today (Monday) to discuss the fresh offensive against the militants, who challenged the writ of the government in Malakand division and areas of Fata despite signing a peace agreement with the government.
The decision to summon the session of the Lower House of the Parliament was taken at the special meeting of the cabinet held on Saturday. The House would focus on the operation, its affects and the problems of the Internal Displaced Persons (IDPs) and likely to evolve an effective strategy in tackling the challenges.
The law enforcement agencies have beefed up security measures of the Parliament Houses and its surroundings by deploying extra forces amid fear and tense atmosphere due to the fresh offensive and its possible reaction by the extremist elements. The NA secretariat has issued fresh entry cards to the entire staff of the Parliament and to the media persons, keeping in view the present security situation.
