Pakistan Museum of Natural History (PMNH) on Friday announced winners of an art competition organised in connection with celebration of National Year of Environment-2009. The competition was organised in collaboration with Intel Pakistan on "Ideal Environment" among school children from educational institutions of the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on April 7.
A total of 74 students between nine to 15 years of age had participated in the competition. According to the Jury, Iman Shahid from Beacon House School System (BSS) won the first prize of Rs 5,000 cash, while Rafia Khan and Khwaja Arsalan Rasheed, both from BSS, won second and third prizes amounting to Rs 3,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively.
Madiha Javed Bhatti and Ozair Akbar Khan from Beacon House School System, Iqra Qamar from FG Model School I-8/1, Maria Bukhari and Zainab from The Educators, and Hanisa Shahban from Horizon School won the consolation prizes comprising gift hampers.
The jury comprised renowned artists and environmentalists including M.D. Alvi, Chief Designer, Pakistan National Council of the Arts (PNCA), Omeed Khalid, Director Council for World Wildlife Conservation and Samiya Haroon, ex-exhibit designer, PMNH. In his comments, PMNH Director Dr Manzoor H. Soomro said the winners of the Art Competition would be awarded prizes in a special ceremony on June 15.
All the participating students would be awarded participation certificates. He said art works of the students would be exhibited at PMNH for public viewing from June 15 onwards for the entire month. He said the event was organised to create awareness of environmental problems among the students and make them active partners in the efforts for protection and conservation of the environment.
